Mike Flower on embracing change and shaping the future of the automotive aftermarket

Strategic Account Manager, Mike Flower, is an automotive aftermarket expert, with over 30 years experience within the industry, witnessing immense change across all sectors of the market. Speaking on the transition he has witnessed, Mike said: “The automotive aftermarket is always evolving, it’s part of its DNA.

“When I first joined the industry over 30 years ago, it was dominated by independent, owner-managed businesses. Today, we’re seeing significant consolidation, with international players and corporate investment changing the landscape completely.”

These changes have increased the need for adaptation, especially for BM Catalysts. “For suppliers, that means adapting. Larger organisations demand more structured engagement across multiple levels and regions, and we’ve worked hard to ensure we can meet those expectations with the same openness and responsiveness that our customers have always valued.” Mike added.

Beyond structural changes, BM Catalysts have adapted to technological advancements – placing new demands on the aftermarket. Increasing vehicle complexity, tighter emissions legislation and the rise of hybridisation have all reshaped product requirements. Mike shed light on the changes seen at BM Catalysts, saying: “A modern exhaust system is worlds apart from those I first worked on,” explains Flower.

“Fifteen years ago, 200-part numbers covered more than half the market. Today, you need thousands. And with Euro 7 on the horizon, that complexity is only going to increase.

“While many thought electrifications would signal the end for emissions systems, the opposite is true. Hybrids still rely on internal combustion engines, which means demand and complexity will continue to grow.”

Despite shifts in the way the aftermarket functions, core fundamentals such as customer expectations have remained the same, Mike said: “The core expectations of customers are exactly the same today as they were 30 years ago.

“They want quality products, reliable availability, strong support and competitive pricing. Delivering those consistently requires investment not just in manufacturing, but in logistics, technical expertise and customer service.”
