BM Catalysts highlights continued strength of the ICE aftermarket amid shifts in EV taxation

Europe’s leading manufacturer of aftermarket hot end emissions products, BM Catalysts acknowledges the enduring importance of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in light of the proposed electric vehicle (EV) pay-per-mile tax.

As the UK government explores possibilities of a new regime for taxing EVs on a pay-per-mile basis, BM Catalysts wishes to reaffirm its commitment to the ICE vehicle parc. As well as explain how the proposed policy links to strategies adopted within the aftermarket.

As reported in The Daily Telegraph, the government treasury is considering a pay-per-mile taxation of roughly 3p per mile. This serves as an attempt to address the sharp decline in fuel duty revenues expected with the rise of electrification. A spokesperson for the Treasury said via The Daily Telegraph:

“While fuel duty covers petrol and diesel, there is no equivalent for electric vehicles, we want a fairer system for all drivers.”

Said to be scheduled for 2028, following consultation, the new EV taxation could see an owner of an electric vehicle covering 20,000 miles per year increase their running cost by £600 per year, while a driver covering 12,000 a year would face an additional £360 charge based on 3p per mile. Coupled with the recent introduction of EV road tax, whereby as of April 2025 drivers of such vehicles are subject to a charge of between £195 and £620 (depending on the list price of the vehicle), running costs associated with electric cars are skyrocketing.

It is often overlooked that despite the growth of EV, the vast majority of vehicles on the road today rely on petrol and diesel engines. Meaning the demand for emissions control systems and related aftermarket components remains significant and is expected to persist for many years, given the average vehicle lifespan now exceeds 12 years.

BM Catalysts’ extensive range reflects this longevity, covering 90% of the car parc. As one of the aftermarket’s most trusted suppliers, BM Catalysts continues to invest heavily in innovation, precision manufacturing and comprehensive product availability to ensure the ongoing health of the ICE aftermarket.

Commercial Director of BM Catalysts, Mark Blinston, said, “BM Catalysts is ready to continue providing excellent coverage to the combustion engine vehicle parc for decades to come.

“We are fully committed to supporting the aftermarket with quality, availability and expertise our customers can rely on.”

The proposed introduction of the per-pay-mile reinforces the ongoing relevance of the ICE and the aftermarket ecosystem that sustains it. It serves as a reminder that, even as the industry evolves, petrol and diesel engines remain central to both mobility and the economy.

Well-positioned to deliver excellence with the automotive aftermarket, BM Catalysts commits to supporting customers throughout the industry’s transition, providing reassurance that emissions control devices within ICE vehicles will be well maintained and compliant for years to come.
