Selective catalytic reduction units take on growing importance for the aftermarket

As the Euro 6 vehicle parc continues to mature, emissions control is presenting the independent aftermarket with a growing range of replacement opportunities. For Europe’s leading manufacturer of aftermarket hot end emission products, BM Catalysts, ensuring factors and distributors have access to the right products means continually developing its range to reflect that changing demand.

One area receiving particular attention is selective catalyst reduction (SCR) units, with BM Catalysts recently placing significant focus on bringing more SCR references into its range.

In a recent New to Range release, eight new SCR references were introduced, delivering coverage for approximately 5.12 million vehicles across the European car parc. The expansion reflects BM Catalysts’ commitment to strengthening its coverage of Euro 6 applications and ensuring partners are equipped for the changing requirements of the vehicle parc.

SCR technology plays an important role in reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines. Following the introduction of Euro 6 emissions standards, the technology became increasingly commonplace, particularly on diesel vehicles with engines above 1.5 litres.

SCR works by introducing Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), commonly known as AdBlue, into the exhaust stream. This enables a chemical reaction within the SCR catalyst which converts NOx into less harmful outputs. SCR technology can reduce a vehicle’s NOx emissions by up to 90%.

For the aftermarket, its increasing prevalence makes SCR an important product category to consider alongside established emissions components such as catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters.

Modern emissions systems are also increasingly complex. SCR can operate alongside diesel particulate filters (DPF), while some applications also combine SCR and DPF functionality within the same component. Accurate application data and access to the correct replacement part are therefore increasingly important.

BM Catalysts sees continued investment in SCR as a natural extension of its wider range-development strategy. Providing such coverage gives factors and distributors access to greater SCR coverage as Euro 6 vehicles become a more established part of aftermarket demand.

As one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of aftermarket hot-end emissions products, BM Catalysts continues to invest in its product offering while supporting customers with cataloguing and practical fitting information.
